The world's largest freshwater fish is caught in the Mekong.

The 300 kg (lb 661 lb) fish caught in the Mekong River in Cambodia is the largest freshwater fish ever recorded, scientists say.

The stingray has released an original record, 646lb (293kg) catfish caught in Thailand in 2005.

"In the 20 years of researching large fish in rivers and lakes on six continents, this is the largest freshwater fish we have ever met or recorded anywhere in the world," said Zeb Hogan, a biologist in a funded conservation project.

There is no official record or database of the world's largest freshwater fish.

"Finding and keeping records of this fish is amazing, and it is a rare positive sign of hope, even more so because it has occurred in the Mekong, a river that is currently facing many challenges," added Dr Hogan.

The conservation project is working with the Cambodian Fisheries Administration to establish a fishery network that alerts researchers if they catch large or endangered fish.

A large freshwater streray is an endangered species. This is the second stingray to be tested by the team since May - the first one weighed 181 kg.
